Many people doze off unintentionally during the day despite getting their usual night’s sleep. When sleepiness interferes with daily activities or reduces your ability to function, it’s called “problem sleepiness” and may be a sign of a serious sleep disorder.

Sleep Disorder Risks
Approximately 70 million Americans suffer from more than 60 types of sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy and restless legs syndrome. Left untreated, sleep disorders reduce your daytime productivity, increase your risk for accidents and can put you at risk for illness.

Sleep Apnea: As Common as Adult Diabetes
Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. These involuntary breathing pauses (“apneic events”) may be as high as 20 or 30 per hour throughout the night. Consequences of untreated sleep apnea include weight gain, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and stroke. Early recognition and treatment are critical because sleep disorders not only adversely affect your physical health, but your mental health.
